The York County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the owner of an 8-foot Boa constrictor a deputy found on the side of the road in Shapleigh on Friday.

The Sheriff’s Office said Friday evening that earlier that day Deputy Jonathan Marshall responded to Shapleigh Corner Road in Shapleigh for an animal complaint

When Deputy Marshall arrived at the scene, he found an 8-foot Boa constrictor.

The Boa constrictor is a non-venomous snake native to tropical South America, that is frequently bred in captivity and is popular in the exotic pet trade.

Boa constrictors are known for their hunting style of wrapping their coils around their prey to constrict it until it suffocates.

After finding the snake, Deputy Marshall secured it in his vehicle to get it out of the cold temperatures, which the Sheriff’s Office said can be deadly to the cold-blooded reptile.

The Maine Warden Service was contacted to retrieve the snake, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said on Friday that they are looking for the owner of the Boa constrictor.
