A homeless man is facing robbery and criminal threatening charges after allegedly entering a U.S. Post Office in Portland and demanding money while threatening to shoot the clerk, according to the Portland Police Department.
According to police, at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, a 32-year-old male entered the Post Office on 125 Forest Ave in Portland.
After approaching the counter, the male suspect demanded the register be opened and threatened to shoot the clerk, police said.
The clerk reportedly refused to open the register and the suspect quickly fled the scene with further threats.
The suspect, identified as Jacobie Jefferson, 32, was later located by police in Deering Oaks Park and taken into custody.
In recent years, the Deering Oaks Park has frequently been the site of impromptu homeless camps.
Jefferson, who police indicated is “unhoused,” was charged with robbery, criminal threatening, refusing to submit to arrest, indecent conduct, violating conditions of release.
Records at the Cumberland County Jail indicate that Jefferson also had a warrant out for his arrest on the charge of failure to appear.
