On September 10th, the West Lawn of the Capitol building will witness a formidable assemblage of conservative activists. Christened the Exempt America rally, the gathering will feature 16 speakers, including 8 congressmen and leaders of various conservative and Tea Party organizations.
The rally, organized by the Tea Party Patriots, will gather supporters and leaders to ask one simple question: if the Obama administration has already exempted Big Business, Big Labor, and Big Government from the new health care law, why shouldn’t the American people be exempted as well? The rally’s website describes the Affordable Care Act – more commonly known as Obamacare – as a “train wreck” and quotes labor boss Jimmy Hoffa Jr. who, in a letter to Democratic leaders, stated that “[Obamacare will . . .] destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.”
Foremost amongst the rally’s goals is to drum up support for what the organizers dub the “Lee Letter.” The letter is one written by U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in response to the Obama administration’s decision to delay the Obamacare employer mandate for a year. In the letter, Senator Lee argues that this delay is tacit proof that Obamacare is “a failure that will inevitably hurt business, American families, and the economy,” and pledges that he and his co-signers will not support any legislation which funds or implements Obamacare.
The Exempt America website urges visitors to talk to their local congressmen and exhort them to sign the Lee Letter. “Signers of Senator Lee’s letter are solidly pledging that they will not vote for a Continuing Resolution that funds Obamacare,” states the site, “Simply co-sponsoring Senator Cruz’s legislation . . . isn’t enough on its own.”
“This isn’t a battle for the weak at heart,” warn the Tea Party Patriots. The organization calls on Tea Party supporters and opponents of Obamacare to take the place of those Republicans who are “afraid to fight” and stop Obamacare in its tracks. “If Obamacare isn’t good enough for Big Business, Big Labor, or Big Government,” argue the Tea Party Patriots, “then it isn’t good enough for the American People.”
Should the endeavor prove successful, congressional Democrats will face a difficult choice: vote for the House’s continuing resolution that does not fund Obamacare or shutdown the federal government to defend the controversial law.
